Maria, Michael and Maya.
The three names echoed through his ears like a steel train crossing over a wooden bridge. Except, this wasn’t a train and life wasn’t this bridge. This was Michael Weatherly and his life, rattling at full speed then coming to a halt.
It had been two weeks now since the accident and the day Michael found out he was a father to Cote de Pablo’s daughter. Cote still hadn’t woken up from her induced coma and their baby was nothing other than perfect. Michael had to take the baby home and share the news then none other, his wife. Of course, she wasn’t too thrilled as any wife would be to their husband coming home saying “oh hey, this is mine and my costars baby that I never knew about”
Not like he didn’t expect it, but he was thrown out. He fucked up big time. Saying sorry was no use because he couldn’t control the feelings he felt and the events that took place the last 9 years.
So, here he was. Crashing at the hospital every night on a cot next to Cote while Diane took the baby home at night.
He had to admit, he was glad Cote had Diane. She was an exquisite best friend when it came to being there for her.
Michael rolled over on the cot, staring at the brunette next to him in a hospital bed. Her breathing was faint, eyes still closed and the tube going down her mouth was rhythmic with her breathing.
He sat up, rubbing his hands on his face. He knew someone would be by to her see her today so, he would need to get ready.
The past two weeks her family was here non stop and even Mark, Sean and Brian came to see her.
Everyone was shocked to find out about her baby and even more shocked when it came to the reveal of who the father of. But, each time it got awkward, Diane was always there to remind Michael of the beautiful little girl he was now a father of and that he shouldn’t feel ashamed.
Michael smiled at the sight of his baby as he rubbed his eyes. She was so little, like her mother. But she had those beautiful eyes and curly brown hair. Christ, she was a clone of her mother.
His thoughts were interrupted as he heard the door open with a thud and a stroller come through.
“Hey, look who it is,” Michael smiled excitedly and walked over to the stroller, picking up the little girl in it.
“Whoopy fucking doo, here we are” Diane groaned and rolled her eyes at Michael, “now if you’ll excuse me from watching your DNA for a moment, I need to go get some coffee” she walked off.
Michael laughed, sitting back down on his cot holding Maya, “Your Aunt Diane is definitely not a morning person. She’s more of a… late at night person” he chuckled “she’ll tell you all about the crazy late night adventures her and your mommy went on. But, you’re not allowed to do any of the things they did when you’re older.”
He smiled at the Maya who just stared up at him and cooed. He fixed the curls around her face and looked over to Cote, she had curls in her face also. Taking his hand, holding the baby with his other, he leaned over the hospital bed and brushed the hair out of Cotes face “like mother, like daughter” he was beaming at his little girl, who started leaning towards her mother as they hovered over her.
“Oh, not yet baby” he pulled her away from Cote and sat back down on the bed. Maya started to cry. “Shh, I know baby. You want Mommy and I promise Mommy will hold you as soon as she wakes up” the crying kept coming and Michael started to feel emotional “god, I shouldn’t of let you two leave after she told me. This is all my fault I’m sorry sweetheart, I know you miss Mommy,” he kissed the top of his baby’s head while a few tears trickled down his cheek “your Mommy’s a fighter. Just like the character she plays on our TV show. Oh, which by the way Maya, you have the coolest parents ever. You get to say both of your parents have a TV show where they’re a couple…well, were a couple. Actually, they kissed, but… Okay basically, they could be a couple if we could get your Mommy back” Michael rambled on to his daughter as they both stared at Cote. Maya began to yawn and close her eyes indicating that she was going to sleep.
“Your old man boring ya?” Michael laughed, picking up her carefully and turning to walk to the stroller when he noticed Diane standing in the door way “I was just-“
“You are boring at times,” Diane giggled, sipping her coffee.
Michael placed Maya in the stroller, tucking her in as Diane watched.
“You’re a good man, Weatherly. I know you are. But, the two of you have to figure this shit out. I’ve been telling both of you this since 2006. There’s always been something here” she pointed to Cote and then back at him “now, that little baby proves it. You just have to figure out what the hell you two are going to do to make it work.” She softly smiled at him as he sighed, looking at Maya in the crib.
“Diane, this is the craziest situation. No matter what we do, someone gets hurt.” He ran his hands over his face.
“I know. That’s why you both have to figure out where your hearts belong. I know for a fact this baby didn’t happen out of just lust so, you can’t use that as an excuse. You gotta figure out your priorities and most importantly, your lives” she patted his back.
Michael sighed as she spoke again “I have to get going to an audition, but I’ll be back later. Text me if you need me. Everything Maya needs is under the stroller,” she smiled and walked out of the hospital room.
“Oh Maya,” Michael sighed and moved her stroller closer to his cot and Cotes hospital bed.
He was about to sit back down on his cot when he remembered something. The doctor had given it to him a week ago. He reached slowly into his pocket, hearing the jingling noise. He grasped the item and brought it out of his pocket, holding it tightly.
He brought the item up to his lips and kissed it softly. Leaving over the hospital bed, Michael took Cotes hand, grabbing her ring finger. Slowly, he slipped on the item in his hand onto her finger. He laid her hand back down on the hospital bed as tears filled his eyes.
The ring still shined with all the love in the world. The silver band of it, glistening under the luminous hospital lighting.
This ring still stood for everything he promised her that evening they made their little girl. This ring stood for all of their memories, the laughs and the cries they had gone through.
But, most importantly, this ring stood for them.
“It’s someday, cote de problem. Our time has finally come,” Michael chuckled and kissed her temple, letting his smooth lips graze over her skin. He pulled away from her, feeling a strong blow to the back of his head and his world going black.
"You know, you could just come down, DiNozzo", Gibbs said, not looking up from his work.
Tony stood at the top of the stairs that led to his boss’ basement and sighed.
"What are you building?", he asked, not yet able to address what he came here for.
"Boat", Gibbs answered simply.
However, Tony knew it held a deeper meaning. Whenever Gibbs built a boat it would get a name. And when there was a name, there was someone he had lost. Tony felt tears pricking the backs of his eyes. This whole situation was just completely screwed up. Never in a hundred years had he expected to have to face this. And he’d always thought that if he did have to face it after all, it would be because of death. Not because she made him leave without her. Slowly Tony made his way down the stairs and traced his finger along the boat Gibbs was currently working on.
"You here to help or drink, DiNozzo?", Gibbs questioned, still not looking at him.
“This is pointless”, Tony complained, throwing another candy wrapper to the backseat.
Ziva chuckled. She had to agree though, it was kind of pointless. They had been sitting in the car for almost three hours now because Gibbs wanted them to watch a suspect. The thing was, he had told them not to do anything but just report what he did, when he left the house and stuff like that. Ziva unwrapped another chocolate bar. Her fifth? Maybe tenth? She didn’t even know anymore. She tossed it behind her seat as well. Seriously, she was glad it wasn’t her car. Tony would have a lot of cleaning to do after they were done with the stake-out.
“So, Ziva, any suggestions on what to do?”, Tony asked, turning in his seat to face her.
“We are already talking, yes?”, she asked.
She was fairly certain that he was trying to convince her of a game of truth or dare or something similar. But to be honest, it was quite fun to tease him and pretend she didn’t know.
“Yeah well I was thinking something more fun perhaps”, Tony said, shrugging, a grin plastered on his face.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! xo
Tony groaned as the ringing of his cell phone pulled him from his sleep. God, he’d only been sleeping for like an hour. Who the hell would be calling him at midnight in the middle of the week? Sure, it was Thanksgiving tomorrow. Or now..rather today. But everyone knew he’d have to work, no matter what. He rubbed his eyes tiredly. If it was Gibbs, informing him about a new case, he would literally not be able to keep his eyes open. He blindly reached for his cell phone and without looking at the caller ID, answered the call and pressed the phone to his ear.
“Yeah?”, he questioned, still half asleep.
“It is officially the new day, so let me be the first to wish you a happy Thanksgiving”, Ziva’s voice filled his ears.
He immediately sat up straight in bed, all the tiredness suddenly gone.
“Ziva?”, he asked in disbelief.
“Ha! I’m done!”, Ziva exclaimed triumphantly, jumping off her chair.
Tony and McGee eyed her annoyed.
“How can you already be done?”, McGee complained.
They’d wrapped up the case an hour ago and now she was the first one to be done. She printed her report and walked over to Gibbs’ desk.
“Good work, Ziva. See you Monday”, he said and Ziva smiled at him.
She walked over to her desk and grabbed her things.
“This is not fair!”, Tony complained loudly.
She grinned at him and came to a stop in front of his desk.
“Life is hard and unfair, Tony”, she teased and turned around to leave.
“I’ll see you at home”, she called over her shoulder.
And the world froze.
She never thought this day would come, not in her reality, not even her dreams. It’s just something she believed she didn’t deserve. Yet as she cradles her newborn son, a mere two days old, she feels an overwhelming sense of joy, happiness, gratefulness.
She is a mother. All her past convictions, her wrong doings, her regret, it all boils down to a path in her life she never intended to take, but did. Despite her desperate need to correct her bad moves, she met a man, a man who won her heart gradually over her time at a workplace in her past, a man who, in spite of her best efforts to keep him at a distance, crawled under her skin and into her heart and made himself at home. The love of her life, the father to her son: Tony DiNozzo.
He’s currently holding the video camera in front of her and Alijaz, grinning and commentating as he documents the little boy and her on the couch in their beach house. It’s their son’s first day at home, they are all tired but happy and settled. Ziva traces a finger along her son’s cheek as he rests comfortably in her arms, she’s still completely and utterly in awe of him, of the life she and Tony created together out of love.
"The date is 1/23/2015. The ever beautiful Ms. Ziva David, mother of my son Alijaz DiNozzo, sitting on the couch in our beach house bedroom, Haifa. Tell me, Ms. David, how are you feeling this bright and sunny day?"
She smiles shyly, giggling and patting her son’s back gently. “I am, tired, but happy, Mr DiNozzo.”
"And how does your first official day at motherhood outside of a hospital building feel?"
"It feels… wonderful."
Her grin widens when Tony leans down to place his hand on Alijaz’s stomach, running his fingers in a slow circular motion for a moment. He’s such a sap. “How about you Bud? First day at home in your Mom’s home country, pretty cool huh?” When the parents get a big yawn in return, they both laugh. “Well, that answers that.”
"What about you, Tony?"
"What about me?"
"You have asked me about how I feel, what about you? How does fatherhood feel?"
"Feels really good. I’m going to do my boy proud."
She smiles softly and shifts Alijaz more into the crook of her arm; “As will I.”
A moment of silence passes between them, Ziva watching her son, Tony watching her. “You’re going to be a great Mom.”
"And you will be, a wonderful father."
"Just you wait until Aunt Abby gets a hold of you kid; she’ll be spoiling you rotten."
"Do not forget Gibbs. He will want to be seeing him as much as possible now that he is working less."
"That reminds me;" Switching the video to photo capture, Tony asks Ziva to smile for a picture for the family ‘back home.’ They’ll want to see as many pictures as possible considering they won’t see them in person for months until Ziva is prepared to return home to DC.
Listening to instruction, Ziva lifts Alijaz a touch higher and smiles brightly as she places a hand on the child’s stomach, proudly showing him off. “Perfect. Abby will be making copies of that photo for months to come. I won’t be surprised if the entire workforce at NCIS have copies by the time I get back there.”
"Knowing Abby, she is always fond of photographs."
"That she is. Plus, this is a picture worth having, my son and the mother of my child, there’s no greater picture in the world."
